Mage Evaluation
Role and Characteristics
The Mage is a job characterized by debuffs and constant damage. They have a wealth of all-unit attacks, flourishing in multi-unit boss battles and quests where they can defeat many mobs.
Strengths
The Mage's greatest appeal is that they can max out the Dragonkin Gauge in three moves, and then strike in Dragonkin mode as a 4-step combo. Grand Battle reruns and event bosses can sometimes be defeated in this 4-step combo, so they are unparalleled when it comes to this type of game content.
Weaknesses
The Mage has low Physical DEF and is prone to being knocked out. Armor and accessory upgrades are a given, but they should also use the appropriate elemental grids and improve their Essences of Battle to counteract this.
Mage Playstyle
4-Step Dragonkin Combo | Constant DPS
The 4-step Dragonkin combo is the Mage's greatest strength. By using a staff and scythe with Dragonkin Gauge Increase (Large), you can fill your Dragonkin Gauge to 90% in two moves, then use a Critical Rate UP Magic Device or staff on the third move to deal huge damage with your fourth attack.
If you prepare an all-unit or single-unit staff corresponding to the enemy's elemental weakness, your easy big damage combo is complete. Mages should memorize this combo.
Extending Buffs
Jadeite and Aetos allow Mages to use multiple Staves to extend a variety of buffs (A/D/M/N/O) to massively increase the damage of their main damage-dealing weapon.
Weapons with Largest Buffs
Buff (A): Steel Sick (30%), Adamante Staff (40%), Blue Comet Staff (40%), Inferno Torch (20%/50%)
Buff (D): Bellows Rod (20%)
Buff (M): Belial Staff (20%), L’Aiguille Rod (20%), Adamante Staff
Buff (N): Ardea Staff (15%/25%)
Buff (O): Rogue Staff (15%/25%)
Evasion Down Combo
Staves like Kerat and Birka increase in damage based on your Evasion DOWN. Using infinite Evasion DOWN weapons such as Belial/Velme (I) and Ancient Bugle (H) can greatly increase your damage and only need to be cast once.
DPS UP Via Debuff Weapon
Mages can apply Magic Damage Taken UP from a different debuff group than Archers, drastically improving DPS for the whole party.
