Swordsman Evaluation
Role and Characteristics
The role of the Swordsman is that of a damage dealer. Their equippable weapons include Greatswords, Magic Twin Blades, and Battleaxes that excel at single-target DPS, so they are a great source of damage in boss battles.
The damage done by the Magic Twin Blades after applying Magic Damage Dealt UP with the Battleaxe and Adamante Buster is mighty. They can also apply very high multiples of Physical Damage Dealt UP before their Dragonkin transformation, outputting tons of damage with their Greatswords in Dragonkin mode.
Swordsman Playstyle
Greatswords | Dragonkin Combo
The biggest source of damage that comes from Greatswords is when they’re boosted by Harp/Crystal, so it is ideal to extend this buff using Greatswords that extend Physical Damage UP (B). Critical Rate UP (A) is nice to have as well, but not many weapons currently extend both. This is a great initial source of damage before more Magic Twin Blades are acquired.
A Swordsman's biggest hit comes from a Dragonkin Greatsword hit from an FA Massive or Extreme damage weapon. The simplest form of this is:
Bronze/Mitra Claymore -> Harp Saber/Crystal Eater -> Folia Fling -> Dragonkin
To increase damage further, you can use the Holy Axe beforehand for the additional Damage Dealt UP buffs and the Deaskalo Seax to apply Damage Taken UP.
Magic Twin Blades | Consistent Damage
Magic Twin Blades are a Swordsman's main source of damage outside of the Dragonkin combo. Holy Axe and Adamante Buster are the biggest sources of buffs for Magic Twin Blades and also stack.
Adamante is best used as a buffer for when you have Magic Twin Blades that extend Magic Damage Dealt UP (K). For example, a good combo to remember is Adamante -> Clima Schwert -> Magic Twin Blades.
You want high Elemental CS Power for your Dual Blades in order to get the most out of them because they have really high scaling due to their multiple attacks.
Axes | Hate Down
Axes reduce Hate Accumulation by 30% for 25s. The Holy Axe provides a powerful buff as well as a second hit when it consumes the debuffs applied by Crystal Eater, Harp, or the Belial Saber.
Strengths
Since Swordsmen can increase their DPS using Battleaxe buffs, they put out high DPS even outside of their Dragonkin mode attacks.
With Guts and a Damage Barrier upon applying Guts, you can cover for your low endurance.
Weaknesses
The defense of the Swordsman is lower compared to other jobs. Because their DPS is high, they may accumulate more Hate than the Guardian and become the target of enemy attacks. You will often see Swordsmen kissing the ground if they are not careful.
Spend your first three turns entirely on buffs that will prepare you for optimal DPS. Consider the following rotation:
Damage Taken UP -> Harp Saber -> Holy Axe
This will provide you Hate Accumulation DOWN and flexible DPS as you’ll have 50% Magic Damage Dealt UP and 150% Physical Damage Dealt UP from Axe and Harp. Once applied, join in on attacking once your Guardian has stable control over their Hate Accumulation. Failure to do so may result in stern lectures from your Cleric.
